Post-mortem on the server outage on March 25, 2024
On March 25, 2024, Capacities was offline for 1 hour and 16 minutes. We are deeply sorry for any interruption of your work this caused to you.
Here's what happened, what this means for you, and what will follow from it.
What happened?
To put it frankly, our understanding of the situation is still unfolding. Capacities was inaccessible and we have indications that this is due to a problem with our cloud provider. Some other services not affiliated with us went offline around the same time as well, which supports this hypothesis.
This led to an unfortunate chain reaction, and it took us a while to recover everything. Nevertheless, Capacities was back, and no data was lost. We took measures to prevent this chain reaction from happening again, and we'll fully investigate the accessibility issue mentioned above.
What does this mean for you?
Again, we are very sorry for any problem this has caused you, be it a presentation that could not have been held, a meeting in which you could not take or access your notes or an important idea you could not capture during that time.
It's important to us to emphasize that your data is and was safe at any point. Our data is stored on an encrypted disk in a data center in Europe. On top of that, we replicate all your notes every hour to two additional data centers in Europe.
There's nothing you need to do. Capacities is fully operational again. Such events are very rare, and we do our best to prevent them from happening again.
What will follow?
It became clear that Capacities needs reliable offline support so you can work on your notes even if you cannot reach the server. We'll be working full steam towards that goal and will gradually introduce steps towards this with our product updates. If you want to stay updated, please vote on our "Offline support" ticket.
Again, we apologize for any interruption of your work. We are working full steam on a better experience every day. Stay tuned!
