Unlinked Mentions
Unlinked mentions show where an object is mentioned by name but not explicitly linked. It helps you find missing connections in your work you might have missed or didn't know existed.
You will find all unlinked mentions under your backlinks in each note. If the unlinked mention section isn't appearing, it is because there are no mentions of your object elsewhere in your space.
How unlinked mentions work
This is an object about New York.
In the background, Capacities scans your space for both linked and unlinked references to New York. Linked references appear in the backlinks section, while unlinked mentions appear in the 'Mentions' section below. You can read more about networked note-taking here.
At the same time, Capacities searches for anywhere you have written about 'New York' but haven't explicitly linked to it. The results of this are below the backlinks section in the 'Mentions' section. You can scroll through this to find interesting connections.
Finding useful links
It's important to evaluate which links are useful to you.
TIP
Linking all mentions of an object is unlikely to be useful in the long term, it's more likely to dilute meaningful connections. Make sure to curate your backlinks so that you have useful information at hand. The unlinked mentions will not disappear if you choose not to link them, so you can always review again in the future.
The first result in the New York mention section is the same object already linked (See backlinks). There is no need to link it again.
But below this is a connection between some architects and New York.
This is useful information as it develops understanding of the New York object, which is the topic of the note, so it's a good idea to create a link between that object and New York.
To do this, highlight the term in the mention, click @ and choose the correct link. This mention turns into a backlink, and will move into the section above.
If you review each mention and link what is useful, you will get more backlinks. These are connections you've defined as useful for your object. You can use these to update the notes in your object. This is how we can constantly learn and iterate on our notes.
INFO
While backlinks appear in the graph view of an object, mentions do not. Backlinks represent first-class connections, whereas mentions only appear in the mentions section.
Based on our review of the 'Mentions' section, we should update the 'Landmarks & Attractions' section of the New York object to include the architects.
The New York object is now connected to more relevant objects and has more useful information within it.
The information had already been collected, but it hadn't been connected.
We now have a more complete understanding of the New York object which is also visible in the graph view.
By periodically reviewing unlinked mentions and selectively creating links between useful mentions and your object, you can find these hidden insights and connections too! 🚀
