Import From Evernote

Migrate from Evernote in structured batches: model first, then converted files.

Important: Raw Evernote exports (ENEX or HTML) do not import directly into Capacities Bulk Import.
You must convert them to Markdown + media first.

For general import docs, see:

Quick migration flow

  1. Map notebooks to Capacities object types and properties.
  2. Export from Evernote (ENEX recommended).
  3. Convert each batch to Markdown + media.
  4. Review mapping in Bulk Import, then import.
  5. Verify each batch before continuing.

Raw ENEX/HTML files do not import directly into Capacities. You must convert them to Markdown + media first.

Understand the paradigm shift

Evernote is notebook-first. Capacities is object-type-first.

Your migration will be cleaner if you first decide what each notebook should become as an object type (or as Pages).

If you want a deeper explanation of this shift, read Understanding the paradigm shift.

Map structure before export

Create key object types first (People, Projects, Meetings, etc.), then add core properties.

Look at your notebooks and group notes into clear noun-based buckets first (for example People, Projects, Meetings).

Then mirror those groups in Capacities by creating matching object types before import.

For mixed or non-noun notebooks (Inbox, Planning, etc.), either:

  1. Restructure them into noun-based groups, or
  2. Import as Pages (good for free-form notes, but without properties).

Export from Evernote in batches

Use Evernote desktop export.

  • Selected-note export is capped (up to 100 notes), so batching is normal
  • Whole notebooks can also be exported
  • Keep batch names explicit (for example, Meetings-2024-batch-01)

Start with ENEX. Use HTML only as fallback for problematic batches.

Remember: ENEX/HTML are export formats, not direct Capacities import formats.

Convert to Markdown + media

Capacities bulk import expects Markdown/CSV/ZIP/media, so Evernote exports need conversion first.

Before import:

  • Keep one notebook/folder per target type where possible
  • Keep filenames clear and unique
  • Keep media with the notes from the same batch

Review mapping, then import

In Capacities, go to Settings > Migrate from another tool > Click the spanner icon, then upload your converted folders.

Before importing:

  • Confirm recognized object types are correct
  • Optionally add an import marker
  • Stop and fix notebook/folder/type setup if preview looks wrong

Then click Analyse, review, and click Import. Keep Capacities open until import completes.

Verify each batch

Check:

  • Titles and object types
  • Key properties (dates, tags, author/source)
  • Internal links
  • Attachments and media
