Why do undated tasks show in Today?

The Today list (task dashboard and the task section on the daily note) is not only “tasks with today’s date”. It also shows undated tasks whose status belongs to the In progress category.

That is intentional: work you have started stays visible even if you have not scheduled a day for it yet.

Waiting For (and similar statuses)

If Waiting For or another waiting-style status appears in Today with no date, that status is usually sitting under the In progress category in your status settings. The status name does not control the Today list; the category does.

To keep those tasks off Today until you are ready to act:

  1. Open Settings > Task Management > Status Customization.
  2. Find the status (for example Waiting For).
  3. Move it into the Blocked category.

Tasks with that status no longer appear in Today or on today’s calendar unless they also have a date or deadline that belongs there. You can still find them on the task dashboard (for example a saved “Waiting for” section) or with a query.

The Getting Things Done status preset places Waiting For in Blocked by default. If you added the status yourself, or rearranged categories earlier, check Status Customization.
