A link within a sentence is always displayed as an inline link (underlined text). Inline links cannot use link block or card views until you convert them to a block.
To convert and change the view: Alt+click (Windows) or Option+click (Mac) the link, select Turn into block, then open the block menu (...) and choose Change view.
To set how future block links to a type should look (for example link block instead of small card), open that object type’s settings and set Default link view. This does not affect links that stay inline in a sentence. See Views.
